MGM To Open New Casino
The sixth licensed casino in the state of Maryland is set to open on December 8th just 10 miles from Washington D.C. overlooking the Potomac River. MGM National Harbor will be the name of magnificent and luxurious resort in Prince George’s County. This $1.4bn casino is expected to be one of the top venues for hosting major events, with a number of names already announced including Bruno Mars, Cher, Duran Duran and other famous artists.

MGM National Harbor carries the trademark of MGM Resorts International, the company behind famous casinos Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage. The newly-opened casino resort will offer exclusive content in terms of both casino and amenities. Premium service will be available through the exclusive hotel of 308 rooms on 24 floors, modern lounges, exclusive restaurants with renowned chefs, retail shops, a spa, nightclubs, meeting space and of course top-class casino. The casino will spread over 125,000 square feet housing over 3,000 slot machines, poker and other table games for a complete gaming experience.
Though certain rooms will be named after other MGM resorts such as Ballroom Bellagio and Mirage Boardrooms, the interior of MGM National Harbor will not adopt their flashy Las-Vegas neon light style. Instead, the sixth Maryland casino will sport a more sophisticated and elegant look. Public spaces within the resort will be decorated with art including the metal sculpture in the form of an iron arch by Bob Dylan.
The accompanying facilities intended for entertainment and large-scale events will have the capacity to accept up to 4,000 people for various kinds of events. Many big names have already been announced and booked to perform, including Bruno Mars, Cher, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Kings Of Leon and more.
Is There a Reason for Concern?
However grand and luxurious this new addition to state’s list of casinos sounds, there have been some opposing opinions and attitudes towards MGM National Harbor.
First of all, there have been heated debates among legislators whether or not the new casino should get the license because there is a real danger of over saturating the gambling market as can be seen on the example of Atlantic City. The response to this was that the new casino would boost state’s economy through thousands of new jobs and revenue which according to the law will go to Education Trust Fund. In fact, 20 percent of the total MGM National Harbor revenue from table games will go to the state, 15% of which will fund the Education programs, while 5% will fund local grants.
Another issue of concern is the traffic congestion that would imminently arise due to the vehicle load on the highways which will be doubled as seen by the projections. Around 20,000 people are expected to head via Interstate 95 on daily basis. Local authorities claim that they are aware of this fact and that they will deal with it by sending more police officers to the critical road points and using digital message boards and helicopters.
